Why You Should Consider LED Warehouse Lighting

More and more people are learning about the benefits of LED lighting for homes and small businesses. But what about LED lighting for warehouses? Take it from Starbeam Lighting in St. Louis: a switch to LED warehouse lighting means big benefits. Let’s look at three of the biggest.

Cost Savings

LED light bulbs are significantly more energy-efficient than a traditional halogen bulb. And by “significantly”, we mean up to 50%. This means that the light output of a 400W halogen can be achieved by a 200W LED bulb, and at half of the energy that the halogen bulb uses. Our lighting company serving St. Louis has yet to meet anyone who doesn’t want to cut their monthly electric bill in half. Here’s another statistic that should have you thinking seriously about an LED retrofit: let’s say the average warehouse lightbulb is running 12 hours a day. Depending on the size of the warehouse, each bulb could be 1,000W. The bulb uses 1,000W/hour to produce light, which equates to 12,000W for one bulb, per day. And if the warehouse has 100 bulbs all on at the same time, that’s a whopping 1,200,000 watts of energy needed per day to light the warehouse. Switching to LED not only reduces your monthly electrical expenses, it also reduces your carbon footprint.

Less Maintenance

The lifespan of an LED lightbulb is considerably longer than traditional bulbs, which is a big advantage in terms of maintenance. Depending on usage, an LED light bulb can last for years, which means less time and money spent on replacement. On the flipside, traditional HID bulbs require far more frequent changing, an issue exacerbated by the fact that some industrial lighting fixtures can be up to 40 feet off the ground, necessitating the use of a lift truck and a hired electrician. Of course, the same amount of effort is needed to change an LED bulb – but the key is that you won’t need to change an LED nearly as often. Standard HID and fluorescent bulbs have a lifespan of 6,000 – 15,000 hours. A typical LED bulb’s lifespan is significantly longer: in the range of 25,000 – 100,000 hours. This means that over the course of one LED bulb’s lifetime, six bulbs of inferior quality will have “lived and died”.

Safety

Utilization of LED lighting means an end to dim, unreliable, and potentially dangerous industrial lighting. LED bulbs are brighter than competing alternatives, and they possess better light quality. This contributes to a work environment that is healthier and more productive. Unlike HID bulbs, which can take anywhere from 2 – 15 minutes to attain full brightness, LED bulbs reach 100% of their intensity right away. Thus there’s no down-time while employees are waiting for the lights to warm up, and less chance of an accident occurring in poorly-lit conditions. Other problems with traditional light bulbs are well documented. Many of these bulbs contain harmful ingredients such as mercury – in fact, fluorescent light bulbs rely on mercury to emit light, and can be toxic if broken. Also, fluorescent bulbs, along with metal halide bulbs and mercury vapor light bulbs, all emit UV radiation, which can be harmful to humans if exposure is prolonged. Poor-quality lighting also contributes to everything from general worker malaise, to full-on headaches and seizures.
